The Highlights

Food waste collection in Hong Kong public rental housing estates

To encourage the practices of food waste source separation, collection and recycling, Environmental Protection Department (“EPD”) launched a 18-month trial scheme for residents by installing smart recycling bins from Cornerstone to collect foodwaste in about 30 blocks of five PRH estates under the Housing Department and the Hong Kong Housing Society.

With the first launch of a 18-month trial scheme for residents by installing smart recycling bins to collect #foodwaste in about 30 blocks of five PRH estates under the Housing Department and the Hong Kong Housing Society in 2022 Q4, it has been counted that more than 40% of residents have been using the recycling bins, and more than 400 metric tons of food waste have been collected in the first 6 months .

Having proactive support from residents for source separation of food waste, this scheme entered the second phase in March this year, coverage including Tin Heng Estate in Tin Shui Wai, Lee On Estate in Ma On Shan and Tsz Hong Estate in Tsz Wan Shan.

The trial scheme uses smart recycling bins equipped with overflow prevention and odour abatement devices to collect food waste and maintain environmental hygiene. The food waste collected will be delivered to #OPARK1 for treatment and conversion into energy and compost.
