Food waste collection in Hong Kong public rental housing estates
To encourage the practices of food waste source separation, collection and recycling, Environmental Protection Department (“EPD”) launched a 18-month trial scheme for residents by installing smart recycling bins #SmartClassify from Cornerstone to collect foodwaste in about 100 blocks of 13 PRH estates under the Housing Department and the Hong Kong Housing Society since 2022 Q4.
With the launch of a 18-month trial scheme for residents by installing smart recycling bins #SmartClassify to collect #foodwaste in 100 blocks of 13 PRH estates under the Housing Department and the Hong Kong Housing Society in 2023 Q3, the coverage of usage will be counted for 170,000 residents.
Having proactive support from residents for source separation of food waste, this scheme entered the second phase in September this year, coverage including On Yam Estate in Kwai Chung, Tak Long Estate in Kai Tak, Yan Tin Estate in Tuen Mun, Upper Ngau Tau Kok Estate in Ngau Tau Kok and Yat Tung Estate in Tung Chung.
The trial scheme uses smart recycling bins #SmartClassify equipped with overflow prevention and odour abatement devices to collect food waste and maintain environmental hygiene. The food waste collected will be delivered to #OPARK1 for treatment and conversion into energy and compost.
